  • Be careful when transferring the transponder
    2019-04-14
I purchased three keys (one for a 2003 Peugeot 307SW and two for a 2004 Citroën Jumper) to replace the broken key blanks. The Peugeot key was easy; the transponder is also sturdy, a small black block. For the Citroën, I replaced the key blade using a 2mm drill bit as a punch for the retaining pin. It went perfectly. The glass transponder is glued with epoxy and requires careful removal. Because the key was already broken, one transponder was apparently very fragile and beyond repair. Fortunately, I was able to get help from a local locksmith for this. Replacing the casing is quite doable with a bit of skill and care. Check beforehand whether the transponder is easy to transfer, because otherwise you might be better off going straight to the right locksmith. Note that not every locksmith is willing to help you with “internet” keys purchased elsewhere. It sometimes takes a bit of persuasion, and be sure to ask about the cost first; I encountered some who simply quoted their standard key price (i.e., key including milling, transponder, and programming) at €95.00. I was able to get it done for €25.00, including the transponder.
